Canberra Avenue Bus Priority Measures and Barton Bus Station Feasibility Study Posted: Monday, 12 September 2011The ACT Government has initiated a feasability study relating to bus facilities in the Barton/Canberra avenue corridor.
Canberra Avenue Bus Priority Measures and Barton Bus Station Feasibility Study Why is the Government doing this study?
At present, there are around 30 buses carrying about 320 passengers
in the morning peak hour on Canberra Avenue. The number of passengers is
increasing every year.
This growth brings with it an important opportunity to encourage
public transport use in Canberra. New and improved bus services have
been introduced, such as the Red Rapid service which runs every 15
minutes from South Canberra through Civic and on to Gungahlin.
A proposed city-bound bus lane on Canberra Avenue will improve travel
time by at least 15 per cent and bus schedules will become more
reliable.
The ACT Government committed $147 million to roads and public
transport in the 2011-2012 Budget. It brings the total transport
commitment since the 2010-2012 Budget to $244 million. This project is
part of that commitment.
Feasibility studies such as this project are the first step in delivering better access to buses in Canberra. Attached please find Pedal Power's response to this study.
