A series of roadworks are currently underway to create a seamless connection between the Monaro and Federal Highways. Pedal Power and various Ride2Work Coordinators have been liaising with the prime contractors for these roadworks to ensure the requirements of cyclists are considered and catered for during construction and as part of the overall design.
Cycling Issues During Roadworks
The areas most affected by the roadworks are Fairbairn and Pialligo Avenues.
Cyclists travelling between Fairbairn Avenue and the airport will continue to be detoured onto Morshead Drive via Robert Campbell Road, Parnell Road, Plant Road and Staff Cadet Avenue. There is no cyclist access to Fairbairn Avenue between Addison Avenue and Majura Road until mid 2014.
Work is underway on the addition of a turning lane at the corner of Pialligo Avenue and Fairbairn Avenue for vehicles travelling eastbound to Canberra Airport. This is scheduled for completion in September 2013. The existing footpath is closed to pedestrians for the duration of the works while a cycle path detour has been provided for cyclists that avoids the roadworks.
For on-road cyclists travelling east along Pialligo Avenue, a temporary cycle lane has been established using bollards.
A detour has been marked out for cyclists travelling east along the recreational/cycle path through Pialligo. The detour will divert cyclists through the western edge of the airport on Ceres Road and Nomad Drive. Refer to the map below for roadworks and signage information during the construction phase:
Cycling Facilities After Completion of Roadworks
At completion of roadworks on-road and recreational path facilities will be reinstated.
