Pedal Power submission to the Canberra Avenue Bus Study
Posted: Monday, 12 September 2011

The ACT Government has initiated a feasability study relating to bus facilities in the Barton/Canberra avenue corridor.

Canberra Avenue Bus Priority Measures and Barton Bus Station Feasibility Study
Why is the Government doing this study?

At present, there are around 30 buses carrying about 320 passengers in the morning peak hour on Canberra Avenue. The number of passengers is increasing every year.

This growth brings with it an important opportunity to encourage public transport use in Canberra. New and improved bus services have been introduced, such as the Red Rapid service which runs every 15 minutes from South Canberra through Civic and on to Gungahlin.

A proposed city-bound bus lane on Canberra Avenue will improve travel time by at least 15 per cent and bus schedules will become more reliable.

The ACT Government committed $147 million to roads and public transport in the 2011-2012 Budget. It brings the total transport commitment since the 2010-2012 Budget to $244 million. This project is part of that commitment.

Feasibility studies such as this project are the first step in delivering better access to buses in Canberra.

Attached please find Pedal Power's response to this study.

Pedal Power’s contribution to the success of the Northbourne Avenue Bus Priority, Cycleway Facility
Posted: Wednesday, 27 July 2011

With the ACT Government’s study into transport options for Northbourne Avenue under way, Pedal Power’s advocacy team has been working hard behind the scenes talking to government officials and politicians to achieve the best outcomes for cycling and sustainable transport generally. We have now released our formal submission, which rejects ‘one size fits all’ solutions including the oft-touted relocation of riders from the road onto a shared off-road path. Instead we are calling for the continued availability of a range of facility types (on-road, off-road and quieter streets) on or in close proximity to Northbourne Avenue, to allow riders of all types and abilities to travel in a north-south direction on cycle routes that best suit their own preferences.

The centrepiece of our submission is a proposal to replace the existing cycle lanes with wider separated or ‘Copenhagen’ cycle lanes, thereby making an already popular and successful facility even better. The facility (as we envisage it) would provide the extra space and separation from motor vehicle traffic desired by many riders, but without sacrificing the speed and priority currently valued by existing users. In addition, we have called for continued improvements to the parallel off-road path through Lyneham/Turner, as well as to the minor street routes either side of Northbourne Avenue.

Civic Cycle Loop gets Government support but your support still needed
Posted: Thursday, 28 October 2010

Our campaign for a  Civic Cycle Loop was launched at Ride to Work Day in 2009.  One year on, at the 2010 Ride to Work Day, the ACT Government announced its list of priority works for cycling and walking with the Civic Cycle Loop at the top of that list.  That's great.   We have proposed the Civic Cycle Loop as  European style physically separated cycle lanes linking the Sullivan's Creek bike path with the Lake Burley Griffin bike path through Civic.  Because it is physically separated it will attract people, who would otherwise be deterred from riding into Civic, out of their car and onto their bike.  Physically separated cycle lanes have been and are being installed in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.  However there is a way to go before it is built and there are some sections of the bureaucracy who didn't think it needs to be physically separated.  Our Civic Cycle Loop proposal is here along with a possible option for Bunda Street.

Here is the Government's announcement and our media response.

In a small place like Canberra your email in support of the proposal will be a big help to our volunteers who lobby for the project. You can join over 100 others who have emailed their support to Jon Stanhope, Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services.  Cc: your email to the Greens and Liberal Shadow Ministers, Caroline Le Couteur and Alistair Coe and to us,  Stanhope@act.gov.au, LeCouteur@act.gov.au , Coe@act.gov.au, advocacy@pedalpower.org.au

Your email does not have to be literary masterpiece but you do have to do it! Even a simple email is good, for example:

Dear Mr Stanhope,

Thanks for your support for the Civic Cycle Loop and cycling in general. The Civic Cycle Loop will encourage me and many others to ride more often, especially because of the physical separation  from traffic it offers.  I look forward to its completion.

Yours sincerely
