Pedal Power ACT is delighted to announce the receipt of a generous grant from the IRT Foundation to enable a Cycling Without Age (CWA) program to be established at Kangara Waters, Belconnen.
The CWA program includes specialised ‘rickshaw’ style electric assist bikes which are used to take older, or less able, passengers for rides (2 passengers in each with one volunteer pilot). Thanks to the grant, Pedal Power ACT is now in a position to order 2 bikes as part of the initial shipment of the rickshaw bikes from Denmark to Australia. They are due to arrive in October.
The CWA program was started in Denmark by Dorthe Pedersen and Ole Kassow, where now ‘more than 3,000 pilots ensure that the elderly get out of their nursing homes, out on the bikes to enjoy the fresh air and the community around them.’ See: http://cyclingwithoutage.org/about/ and this You Tube clip
A leader of the program in Denmark was in Australia and New Zealand to promote this program and Pedal Power ACT arranged for her to come to Canberra in early January 2016. Kangara Waters on the lake at Belconnen was chosen as an ideal site to initiate the project in Canberra. Kangara Waters management was very keen to set up the program and asked Pedal Power to assist.
The program will be officially launched in Australia in October when the new bikes arrive and a 2 day take-off program will be conducted to get things started. Pedal Power ACT will then recruit and train a group of pilots to take elderly passengers for rides around Lake Ginninderra and beyond, just in time for spring.
