Are you a confident cyclist who can spare a few hours of your time to help others get in the saddle?
An affiliate program of Pedal Power ACT, Canberra’s FIT-Ability Tandem Cycling Program wants to hear from you!
This innovative non-profit organisation is looking for local cyclists to ride as ‘tandem pilots’ with vision impaired cyclists who might not otherwise get to ride a bike…
Tandem pilot Tony, said of the program: “As a tandem pilot I get immense satisfaction from sharing the joy of cycling with sight-impaired members of my community. It provides me with a strong sense of community engagement and an increased level of motivation to improve my fitness and achieve my personal goals as well as developing friendships in the Canberra community… Tandems are now my favourite form of cycling, especially because of the friendships I’m making in the FIT-Ability team… Above all else, piloting a tandem with the FIT-Ability team is a lot of fun!”
FIT-Ability’s Lauren Brand added: “We provide training for all tandem pilot volunteers and have a range of tandem bikes to suit most riders. There is a whole range of rides for tandem pilots of all persuasions – we participate in different activities such as Pedal Power social rides, Wanderers, individual rides with cycling buddies, long distance events and racing.
“We are always looking for confident cyclists to ride with us on an occasional basis. Larger guys are particularly needed to ride with some of our male vision impaired riders.”
If you want to give something back to cycling and share your enthusiasm with others, you can find out more at FIT-Ability’s website: www.fitability.org.au, or email Lauren on firstname.lastname@example.org.
