Girls on Bikes is a free program that aims to mobilise and empower women and girls in Canberra.
The first cohort of Girls on Bikes participants completed their Cycle Well program in November, and organiser Sophie told us that everyone loved the experience.
“All the women were riding and elated at their new skill. There were a lot of good feels!” said Sophie.
Girls on Bikes is aimed primarily at migrant and refugee women, and aims to use bike riding to enable fitness, strength, independence and a sense of community.
The program includes a free bike, donated by other members of the community, and a sponsored spot in Pedal Power ACT’s Cycle Well Learn-to-Ride program.
Cycle Well ran over five weeks, and by the final session all of the inaugural Girls on Bikes participants successfully rode their bikes.
Both Sophie and Pedal Power ACT look forward to seeing these women continue bike-riding, with the support of the Canberran cycling community. Many thanks to everyone who supported the program, and we look forward to the next one!
