Belconnen’s famous red bridge has a new life, recycled and repurposed 15km away beside Lake Burley Griffin at Molonglo Reach.
Bike riders welcomed the completion of the path and bridge which replaces the shared path damaged by floods in March 2012.
The former footbridge was dismantled in September 2009 to make way for an extension to Belconnen Mall. There was much comment at the time about what would happen to the iconic structure, with many hoping it would be used elsewhere.
"It's great to see the bridge used so effectively. It's addition is another step closer to completing a cycle route around the whole lake," said Pedal Power Executive Officer, John Armstrong.
