A member recently got in touch with us about an experience they had while driving their car along a main road in Canberra prior to sunrise.
In the dark, of a usual pre-Winter morning in Canberra, our member approached what they soon realised to be a group of cyclists. Our member was a little distressed, as they had not seen them as early as they would have liked. And the reason why was because the road users were all riding without lights.
As the mornings remain darker for longer, and the sun sets earlier of an evening, the team at Pedal Power ACT wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of being seen when riding in the dark.
It is a legal requirement in Canberra to ride with a white headlight, a red taillight and a red tail reflector. It is important to ensure you have these items on your bike anytime you are riding on a road, footpath or shared path in the dark – not just for your safety, but the safety of others.
There are little things we can all do to keep everyone’s riding experience a memorable and safe one, so please take the time to light up your life on the bike this winter.
