May Message from the CEO

News 1 421

It’s been a massive month for the Pedal Power ACT team, as we recorded one of our biggest advocacy victories to date.

Pedal Power ACT has been campaigning to get more bike racks on ACTION buses since 2007 and Minister Shane Rattenbury’s announcement that the government will finally be fitting racks on the longer articulated and steer-tag buses, means that 98% of ACTION buses will soon be able to carry bikes.

It has been a long and sometimes frustrating campaign for the Pedal Power ACT team lobbying for this change, but this announcement gives us that extra motivation to continue striving for what we believe our members, and the broader ACT cycling community, deserve.

It has also been great to see the ACT government, along with Pedal Power ACT and others, enthusiastically throw itself behind the ‘Share the Road Pledge’ as part of National Road Safety Week (May 3-10). As road safety remains a serious issue, I strongly encourage all our members, and in fact all Canberrans, to take the pledge that says:

It doesn’t matter if I’m driving a car, cycling, riding a motorcycle, or walking – I will act responsibly and be courteous and respectful to other road users. I pledge to share the road.”

The next challenge for the ACT Government is to build on the momentum of National Road Safety week and work to make our roads safer all year round. All the work that has been done to make this week a success will be lost unless further action is taken.

But just because National Road Safety Week is over, doesn’t mean that you can’t continue to take the pledge.

In other news, I am delighted to announce that Pedal Power has engaged Nic Beveridge as our new Communications Manager. Nic brings with him an impressive range of skills, including substantial public relations and communication experience throughout Australia. Nic will start with Pedal Power at the end of May and we have no doubt he will make an excellent addition to the team.

I wish you all a safe and exciting May, and I look forward to seeing you on the bike soon, making the most of our beautiful city.

This is good news, makes riding a bike to work everyday even easier now. Thanks Pedal Power for your persistence and Shane Rattenbury for his support & good sense.
