Pedal Power ACT is the proud recipient of a Nature Play grant to assist with setting up a new mountain-biking program in the ACT.
“This is a fantastic program to provide introductory mountain-biking recreation activities for the Canberra community – with no age limit,” said Pedal Power EO John Armstrong.
“It is also Pedal Power ACT’s first foray into cycle-tourism in the ACT, and we hope to attract visitors to Canberra to experience the great mountain-biking that is available in our region.”
Nature Play Grants aim to assist with new or existing projects that support active living and increase community participation in nature-based outdoor activities and events.
The Pedal Power ACT grant will go towards guided recreational mountain bike rides, with education and training of ride leaders. We are currently seeking people interested in becoming ride leaders for this program.
Recreational mountain-biking is a very popular activity within the ACT, with its popularity only set to increase. The ACT has excellent mountain bike trails and paths, but a lack of knowledge of the trails and the fear of not being supported often limits people in exploring the nature parks of the ACT.
Cycle-tourism is recognised as a growing sector of the tourism market, and the Government’s election commitment to develop a cycle-tourism strategy indicates that now is the perfect time to launch such a program to appeal to visitors to the ACT.
The rides will be spread across the common ACT trails and graded for fitness and difficulty.
Enjoying time in nature is integral to our health and well-being and both Pedal Power ACT and the ACT Government are committed to ensuring there are plenty of opportunities for Canberrans to participate in active recreation outdoors to enrich their everyday lives.
