Pedal Power ACT’s Official Christmas Gift Guide

Featured News, News 0 305

It’s only weeks until Christmas: what will you put under the tree for the bike rider in your life?

It can be tough to find the right present for the bike-mad among us. When Pedal Power ACT EO John Armstrong was asked what he wants for Christmas, he didn’t even blink before answering: “more Canberrans cycling, more often”.

We’re working hard to make that happen, but in the meantime we have a range of Christmas suggestions, with gift ideas for every budget.

And Pedal Power ACT would love to hear your Canberra cycling wishlist for Christmas, too – send us an email or comment on our Facebook page.

The only gift most bike riders want

Go for a ride with them – it’s free.

Most avid bike riders only really want one gift from their loved ones – particularly if the loved one in question isn’t as cycling-mad as they are.

Go on a ride with them. Pick a calm, clear day, and let them choose the route. You might like to gently suggest a time limit in line with your capabilities, and be realistic – but most of all have fun.

A gift to motivate and inspire

Cycling Around Canberra $33

Want to get out on your bike more around Canberra, but need some inspiration? This book has 25 rides around Canberra and the ACT region for all levels of cycling proficiency. A useful gift for anyone who might like to increase their activity level and regional knowledge.

Something they could really use

A bike service $50+

This gift could be given in one of two ways:

  1. For the DIY bike rider, a bike maintenance course is a gift that will last a lifetime.
  2. For the rider who would prefer to be in the saddle rather than covered in grease, give your local bike shop a call and ask about booking in a service. They may even offer gift certificates.

The essential gift for a Canberra bike rider

The safe buy

COROS Frontier Smart Helmet $249.99

Embedded with ‘Smart Technology’, the COROS Frontier Smart Helmet is designed for safety as well as performance. Headphones are built into the helmet, with high quality bone conduction speakers and a wind resistant microphone, allowing riders to be fully aware of what is happening around them.

It also allows for a smart remote to be mounted on your bike’s handlebars, voice navigation and is water-resistant – what else could you want in a helmet?

Something gadget-y

Garmin Fenix watch $949.00

Most bike riders who are into gadgets are really into gadgets. They know exactly what they want, and they are not shy about telling you, your neighbours, the guy at the coffee shop and the parcel delivery guy about it. You’ll know the parcel delivery guy well by now – he’s the one who delivers bike parts to your house every day.

So one way to find out what this bike rider wants for Christmas is to stop tuning out the gadget-talk for a week or so. Or you could take a risk and ask your local bike shop for advice (keep the receipt).

If your cycling-enthusiast is looking for a smart watch to integrate with their riding apps, but isn’t sold on the Apple watch, the Garmin Fenix 3 HR might be the answer. While it is more stylish than your average smart watch, the big selling point here is functionality. It can monitor heartrate without the need for a chest strap, making it perfect for the commuter cyclist who wants to measure activity without getting too complicated.

Give the Capital Experience

Capital Country Enlighten Tour from $2170pp

Visitors wander along the pathway between Reconciliation Place and the National Library of Australia during Enlighten.

Autumn is the best time of year in Canberra – particularly if you’re a bike rider. The Big Canberra Bike Ride is at the start of the month, and with the promise of cooler days ahead, March is the perfect time of the year to cycle. Cycle-tourism in the ACT is becoming more popular every year, so now is the time to discover the beauty of our very own Capital Country. This six day tour will take participants from the stunning Enlighten Festival in the middle of Canberra, to bicycle rides through wonderful open countryside.

Tour operator Mulga Bicycle Tours will offer a 5% discount to Pedal Power ACT members who book any of their tours before January 14 2017. To claim the discount, enter “NewsWheel 5% Christmas Discount” with your membership number in the “How did you hear about this tour?” field during the booking process. One 5% discount per member.
