Cycling opportunities in Canberra
Pedal Power ACT promotes cycling in all of its forms – for pleasure, for sport, for general health and wellbeing or to commute to work.
That is why we believe major cycling events – with the emphasis on participation and inclusion, not necessarily competition – are a fantastic way to bring together the diverse cycling community of Canberra as well as showcasing cycling opportunities that exist in the ACT.
We organise and support a range of major participation cycling events in Canberra each year.
Major events Pedal Power ACT organise are:
Big Canberra Bike Ride
The Big Canberra Bike Ride is one of Canberra’s premier cycling participation events. In 2018 it will be held on Sunday 18 February 2018.
The Big Canberra Bike Ride was developed to provide an opportunity for bike riders of all abilities and ages to celebrate Canberra’s wonderful bike-riding community.
The event is proud to support the Amy Gillett Foundation as the official beneficiary charity for the 2018 Ride.
The Amy Gillett Foundation was established after the death of Amy Gillett, who was hit and killed by an out-of-control motorist whilst cycling with her national teammates in Germany. The Foundation works to reduce the incidence of death and injury of bike riders.
The 2018 Big Canberra Bike Ride features four different rides:
- 5 km
- 20 km
- 68 km
- 120 km
Fitz’s Challenge is Canberra’s toughest long distance cycling event.
The event features five different hilly and challenging course distances for cyclists to ride within a supported environment.
The five distances – 50km, 105km, 165km, 210km and 255km – are set across Canberra’s Brindabella Ranges and are sure to test every participant as they ascend to some of the highest points in the ACT.
Fitz’s Challenge is an inclusive cycling event and open to riders 12 years and up (adult supervision required for cyclists under 18 years of age).
