Bike maintenance courses

Pedal Power conducts bike maintenance courses as a member service at beginner and intermediate, and advanced levels ‑ details of each course are given below.  The prices are subsidised for Pedal Power members (exclusive to Pedal Power members only).

BOOKING COURSES

Bookings close midday on the Wednesday before the course date.
Cancellations after this closing date are not refunded.

If booking within one week before the closing date, please contact the office to check if places are still available ‑ phone 6248 7995 during office hours or email your desire to attend.

If a course is full and you have paid online after it filled, you will be offered a refund or a booking in the next course or on some other date. The Office will contact you if this should happen.

‘BEGINNER I’ BIKE MAINTENANCE COURSE

Learn how to do pre-ride checks, repair punctures and more, for trouble free riding

Normally held on the LAST Sunday in January, March, May, July, September, and November.
Cost: $25 (payable when booking)
Duration: 4 hours from 10 am to 2 pm
Location: O’Connor Guide Hall in Clianthus Street, O’Connor

Check the Pedal Power website ‘events’ and the e-bulletin for specific dates and changes to courses and locations. 

Participants should bring their bike, a pump, a spare tube, tyre levers, a puncture repair kit and a snack for lunch. If you do not have a repair kit (including recommended tyre levers), there will be some for sale at the course.

At the end of the Beginners I session, the participant should be able to:
a) Conduct a basic road side repair - tube repair and replacement including:
       Wheel removal and replacement
       Tyre and tube removal and replacement
       Tyre and tube inspection
       Tube puncture repair
b) Conduct a wheel rim inspection and wheel trueness inspection
c) Describe simple tool kit accessories.
d) Understand how to use gears
e) Understand of pedalling techniques and cadence

‘BEGINNERS II’ BIKE MAINTENANCE COURSE

Learn how to do basic bike inspections and undertake straightforward repairs.

Held if sufficient demand normally on the FIRST Sunday in April, August, October and December
If interested look in the Pedal Power website ‘events’ to see if a course is scheduled.  If scheduled and you want to attend, make an online booking (see link below), phone the office on 6248 7995 or print the paper form above.

Cost: $30 (payable when booking)
Duration: 5 hours from 10 am to 3 pm
Location: O’Connor Guide Hall in Clianthus Street, O’Connor

Participants should bring their bike and some lunch.

The Beginners II session covers:
       a) Discussion of types of bikes and their uses
       b) Fitting your bike to your needs
       c) Cleaning the frame and components
       d) Chain lubrication, the different products and their use on the chain
       e) Discussion of types of tyres, their uses and tricks in prolonging their life
       f) Bike-forensics: learning to spot wear and other problems before they become serious
       g) How to use a maintenance checklist
       h) More on gear use and fine tuning
       i) How to do simple repairs yourself and knowing when to go to the bike shop
       j) Written notes with maintenance tips and tricks

‘INTERMEDIATE’ BIKE MAINTENANCE COURSE

Builds on beginners courses with more detailed adjustments to brakes and gears, learn to service wheel hubs, replace the bearings and more.

Normally held on the LAST Sunday in January, March, May, July, September, and November
Cost: $55 (payable when booking)
Duration: 6 hours from 10 am to 4 pm
Location:  Contact Pedal Power office on 6248 7995 for venue details.

Participants should bring their bike and some lunch.

At the end of the session, the participant should be able to:
a) Conduct inspection on bicycle to identify:
       Worn or damaged brake components
       Worn crank bearings and front chain rings
       Worn or damaged front derailleur components
       Chain wear and when to replace chain
       Worn rear cassette components
       Worn or damaged rear derailleur components
b) Make adjustments on bicycle including
       Removal and replacements of chains and cassettes
       Front and rear derailleur adjustments for optimum gear shifts
       Gear cable replacements
       Servicing hubs including worn part identification and replacement
       Brake adjustments including cable and brake pad replacements

‘ADVANCED’ BIKE MAINTENANCE COURSE

Builds on the intermediate course with more detailed adjustments and repairs to brakes, gears, peddles, bearings, wheels and more using specialised tools.

Only held as needed when there is sufficient demand.
