Grade: S-X
Distance: 3.7 km, one way
Road Conditions: Mainly cycle paths
Route: From Belconnen Town Centre along the western edge of Lake Ginninderra to Copland College, Melba
Map: Location Map (Ride No 7) and detailed map of ride
Starting Point: Lathlain St/Luxton St Belconnen Town Centre
Description: Ride to the right down Luxton St across the bridge spanning Joynton Smith Dr. and pick up the cycle-way circling Lake Ginninderra. Turn left here and ride on to pass through the first of several picnic areas on the lake shore. About 0.5 km beyond this (1.8 km from the start) reach a path coming in from the left. Take it and ride under Coulter Dr.
The path runs parallel with Coulter Dr., then swings left at the Coulter Dr./ Ginninderra Dr. intersection to proceed more or less parallel with Ginninderra Dr. It passes through an old avenue of pine trees and travels down Ginninderra Dr. below transmission lines before tunnelling under this thoroughfare and then zipping through another tunnel under Copland Dr.
Taking a turn to the right, the cycle-way runs past a BMX track, crosses a bridge, and links with the Belconnen Town Centre-Holt path at a sign pointing to Flynn, Latham, Charnwood and Macgregor to the left and Melba to the right. It's certainly a quicker way of getting to these suburbs than the longer route via Mckellar (see Commuter Ride 6), but, as mentioned, is not as scenically rewarding.
