Banana rails off the menu

Pedal Power welcomes advice that the ACT Government will act quickly to remove dangerous banana rails, recently installed along the main Lake Burley Griffin cycle path near the Arboretum.

Last week we were astonished to discover that two of these dangerous banana rails had been installed, and lobbied the ACT Government that they be removed before someone was injured.

Banana rails have been excluded from ACT Government design standards, and many of the existing rails along the Lake Burley Griffin path have been removed for safety reasons.

On behalf of Canberra’s cycling community, we congratulate the ACT Government for responding so quickly. Pedal Power has done a lot of work over the years to get these hazards recognised, and to get the ACT Government to commit to not installing new banana rails on ACT paths.

The ACT Government has indicated that they are investigating how this occurred and has made a commitment that the rails will shortly be removed. This is a really good outcome for our community. We look forward to the removal of these rails and to finding out how they got there in the first place.

We’d like to thank all the people who took the effort to make contact and alert us to these hazards. It’s great to be part of an engaged cycling community where people are looking out for each other.
