2022 UCI Road World Championships in the Gong

Lovers of world-class competitive cycling are in for a treat in a little over twelve months’ time when Wollongong hosts the 2022 UCI Road World Championships, and Pedal Power ACT members are invited to be there.

The UCI Road World Championships are one of the most important and prestigious annual events in world sport. Alongside the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia, the Road World Championships makes up what are called international cycling’s ‘Triple Crown’.

‘This is great news for Australia, for Wollongong, and for cyclists within easy reach of the NSW south coast,’ said Stu Taggart, CEO of W2022.‘While most of the attention will be on the 1,000 competitors, amongst the world’s best, who’ll be competing for eleven world titles over eight days, there’ll also be an opportunity for riders from intrastate and interstate to take part in amass participation cycling event along our scenic coastal course.’

Despite the challenges of COVID, bookings for accommodation are already hotting up and organisers expect 300,000 spectators to line the course when racing begins on 18 September next year.

We are super excited. This will be the biggest cycling event in Australia over the next few years, and we’re encouraging riders across all cycling disciplines to start planning a visit to the Gong next September,’ Stu added.
