The Bike Library

The Bike Library

The Bike Library operates just like a regular library, providing free, long-term access to second-hand bicycles, scooters, helmets and locks to any adult or child requiring a bike. Loans are available for up to six months with extensions available upon request.

How it works:

  1. Preloved bicycles are donated to the library
  2. Our volunteer mechanics refurbish the bikes
  3. Once in working order, the bikes are made available to the community to loan
  4. Members of the community contact us via Facebook or email to find out what bikes we have available. Or they visit us between 11am – 2pm every Tuesday to pick out a bike

The Bike Library was established in 2019 following a partnership between Northside Community Service, GIVIT and Margaret Hendry School to address accessibility issues in the Community. Now the Bike Library is run by Pedal Power in partnership with Margaret Hendry School, and Community Services #1 with the support of Mingle.

As well as facilitating access to bikes, the Bike Library equips the community with the skills, knowledge and resources to get the most from them. We run extremely popular ‘Bike Jams’ (maintenance workshops) and ‘Learn to Ride’ sessions which empower community members to learn new skills, feel safe and in control while riding or fixing their own bikes.
