Lil Bryant-Johnson’s Volunteer Story: Five Days That Made a Big Difference

Lil Bryant-Johnson’s Volunteer Story: Five Days That Made a Big Difference

From July 7–11, Lil volunteered her time and energy to help children master the basics of bike riding in our Big Skills for Small Bikes (BSSB) program, and she came away with a huge sense of accomplishment and plenty of smiles.

Using her ACT Public Service 'Volunteer leave', Lil dedicated a few hours each morning to work closely with course convenor Robert, to guide a group of young riders (and their parents) to take their first wobbly steps toward confident bike riding.

Each morning, Lil helped create a fun and supportive environment where the kids felt safe to try, fall, and try again. From cheering on their early attempts to celebrating their breakthroughs, she brought warmth, patience, and enthusiasm to every interaction.

For Lil, volunteering wasn’t just about teaching skills, it was about seeing the joy on children’s faces when they realised “I can do this!” Along the way, she also connected with families and discovered how rewarding it is to give back to her local community.

By the final day, Lil had watched her group grow from nervous beginners to confident riders, and she left knowing her efforts had made a real difference.
