Why we exist

More people on bikes, more often.

Pedal Power represents people who ride and people who would like to. We connect advocacy, practical programs and community so cycling can be an enjoyable everyday choice.

Our vision

Canberra becomes the cycling capital of Australia.

Our mission

Advance community health and well-being through safe and convenient cycling.

Our goal

Cycling is an enjoyable and convenient everyday activity for all Canberrans.

01

Advocacy

We work for safer streets, connected infrastructure and policies that make riding a practical choice.

02

Skills and access

We help people start, return to and enjoy cycling through courses, workshops and inclusive programs.

03

Community

We create opportunities for people to ride together, volunteer and help shape a more bike-friendly Canberra.

Our story

Built by people who wanted a better way to ride.

Pedal Power grew from community action and remains grounded in the experience of people riding across Canberra.

1974

A protest ride begins the story

Howard Rawson and Bill Crowle organised a ride from Belconnen to Civic to call for better cycling infrastructure.

1975

Pedal Power ACT is formed

Riders came together to establish a dedicated cycling advocacy group for Canberra.

Today

The work continues

We keep advocating, building skills and creating opportunities for more people to ride safely and confidently.

Watch the beginning

The original 1974 protest ride.

More than 50 cyclists rode from Belconnen to Civic to call for safer routes. The television news footage is preserved by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.

Diversity and inclusion

Cycling should be for everyone.

We work to remove the structural, social and financial barriers that stop people from cycling safely or confidently, regardless of age, gender identity, cultural background, income or ability.
