Construction’s in full swing, not just light rail but major underground upgrades too. We’ve been tracking bike traffic on Commonwealth Bridge: twice as many riders use the west footpath, mostly heading lakeside or onto the protected road lane.

More riders are using Barrine Drive under the bridge than crossing it, likely to avoid city traffic lights.

Good news, new signage is up! Clear maps and accessible route signs make navigation easier. But take extra care southbound on Commonwealth Ave past Parkes Way, fast traffic merges here.

Terry loves cycling, but after a tough crash on his MTB above the Cotter, he was left with a broken collarbone, fractured ribs and a powerful lesson. At the hospital, he was sure he hadn’t hit his head. But when he got home and saw his helmet, completely shattered, reality set in. That helmet had saved his life.

His message? Always wear your helmet. It’s not just about safety, it’s about giving yourself the chance to get back up and ride again. Learn from Terry, ride smart, and keep enjoying the journey!

Light rail construction continues, with underground utilities checked and trenches filled. Cyclists should note changing routes, upcoming closures, and detours, especially for Skyfire on March 15.

The Fancy Women’s Bicycle Ride 2025 turned Haig Park into a festival of colour, style, and empowerment! From disco-ball helmets to Superwoman costumes, the event was as visually stunning as it was meaningful. With best-dressed awards and an electric atmosphere, the ride was a true celebration of cycling, community, and empowerment.

Last Saturday, Haig Park came alive as cyclists of all ages joined Pedal Power’s “Pedalling Together” a celebration of volunteers and advocates as part of Pedal Powers’ 50th Anniversary Celebrations. Special guests included Shane Rattenbury MLA and Kim Young (89 and still cycling!), alongside Cycling Without Age, promoting inclusive riding.

Tired of being mistreated by drivers, cyclist Craig Munns took matters into his own hands by installing two affordable cameras—one on his helmet and one on his bike. The results speak for themselves: two drivers have been charged, and the mere presence of the cameras has made drivers more considerate. Craig's experience proves you don't need expensive equipment to make a difference. His advice? Look for cameras with good waterproof features and easy-to-navigate editing software. The effort is worth it, especially when it helps improve cyclist safety on the roads.

Pedal Power is kicking off our 50th anniversary celebrations in style with a special community gathering and a 6 km ride through Canberra’s city centre. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just love the idea of a leisurely group ride, this event is for you. 

Pedal Power this week lodged a Budget Submission to the ACT Legislative Assembly articulating our programs and a strong case for future funding.

This also included a comprehensive summary of Infrastructure Projects that will support bicycle safety and promote Active Travel.

As the Light Rail Stage 2a construction continues, more road works and disruptions are happening in the City. Pedal Power has been working with Light Rail to make sure we continue to have viable bike routes to use.

Trevor Costa, took up mountain biking as his retirement project and it worked beautifully also as an opportunity to indulge his passions for nature appreciation and wildlife photography. He invites Pedal Power members to join him on the ACT National Parks Association rides.

Pedal Power wants to keep an eye on the use of temporary traffic signs when they are used on roads, and how they affect traffic. Please get in touch with anything that’s amiss.

Pedal Power has now released its new Strategic Plan for 2025-27.

While this new Plan has many similarities with the old one, it also has a greater emphasis on collaboration and recognition of members and volunteers.

We recently undertook a comprehensive, whole-of-organisation review using an empowerment evaluation methodology. Four priority areas emerged: advocacy, income generation, volunteer engagement and program Improvement.

In partnership with the Taylor Community and Social Group and Pedal Power’s Bike Library Fix and Ride workshop, a group of creative women under the leadership of Fran Freeman yarn-bombed a few bikes.

Pedal Power’s ED Cecily Michaels attended the Canberra Environment Centre (CEC)'s 50th birthday celebrations, an event that not only marked a significant milestone but also reinforced the valuable partnership between Pedal Power and the CEC.

Our last Cycle Well course of the year wrapped up with a remarkable group of 10 new cyclists—all taking their very first steps (or pedals!) into the world of cycling.
