Light Rail Stage 2B will reshape the corridor between Woden and the city. This is the moment to deliver a continuous, separated bikeway too, giving Canberrans a safe and direct choice to ride.
The route is understood. It now needs funding.
Planning has moved forward, but the separated bikeway is still not secured. Pedal Power is asking the ACT Government to turn completed feasibility work into detailed design and construction.

A direct route should not require riding beside high-speed traffic.
Woden and Civic are two of Canberra's largest employment, education and service centres. Yet people trying to travel directly by bike still face an incomplete and inconsistent corridor.
Existing on-road cycle lanes along Adelaide Avenue cross motorway-style entry and exit ramps. They suit confident riders, but many people will not consider the route safe enough for an everyday trip.
A principal route should work for more than the most experienced riders. It should be safe and understandable for commuters, students, families, e-bike riders and people making local trips between the Inner South and Woden.
A continuous separated bikeway would provide the missing direct connection while complementing existing shared paths through other parts of the southside.
One corridor. One opportunity to get it right.
The Light Rail Stage 2B environmental planning recognises a future direct cycle route and includes active-travel connections around stops. It also indicates that some bikeway elements may be delivered through separate projects.
That separation must not become an excuse for delay. The bikeway should be coordinated with light rail, while progressing on its own timetable wherever it can be delivered sooner.
Do not rebuild the corridor and leave the safe cycling connection for later.
Commit, coordinate and build.
Pedal Power is calling for a funded, continuous and separated connection between Woden and Civic that is treated as essential transport infrastructure.
Fund the next stage
Commit funding for detailed design and construction, building on the feasibility work already completed.
Progress it independently
Do not make the cycleway wait for the full Light Rail Stage 2B construction timetable where earlier delivery is possible.
Make it continuous
Remove missing links so people can travel between Woden and Civic without being pushed into high-speed traffic.
Separate riders from traffic
Use a high-quality protected design that is welcoming to people of different ages, abilities and confidence levels.
Fix crossings and ramps
Design safe, legible priority at intersections, light rail stops and Adelaide Avenue entry and exit ramps.
Protect access during construction
Provide safe and direct cycling detours throughout light rail works, supported by clear wayfinding and advance notice.
More than 100 people rode from Woden to Civic to call for this connection.
