Selected for the travel survey? Make every bike trip count

The main phase of the 2026 ACT and Queanbeyan-Palerang Household Travel Survey begins on Monday 31 August.

The survey, being conducted by Ipsos, will help governments understand how people move around the region. Its findings will inform future transport planning, policy, services and investment in roads, public transport, walking and cycling infrastructure.

Households have been selected at random from residential addresses across the ACT and Queanbeyan-Palerang region. This means it is not an open public survey and people cannot register independently to participate.

If your household is selected, you will be asked to record the travel and activities of everyone in your home on an assigned day.

It is important to record what actually happened, including every cycling trip. Short rides to the shops, school, work, appointments or social activities can be easily forgotten, but they are an important part of Canberra’s transport picture.

You should also include journeys involving more than one form of transport, such as riding to a bus stop or cycling part of the way to work.

There is no need to travel differently because you are completing the survey. The goal is simply to provide an accurate account of your assigned day, including if you did not leave home.

Reliable data matters. If short and everyday cycling journeys are missed, the survey may underestimate how many people rely on bikes and how important safe, connected infrastructure is to the community.

Participation is voluntary, and the results will be reported in a de-identified or aggregated form. The main survey will run until mid-November, with data collection paused during the October school holidays.
