Belconnen cycling gaps left for ‘future consideration’
Gaps in Belconnen’s town centre cycling network remain unresolved a decade after its master plan identified the need for better connections.
The ACT Government’s review of the 2016 Belconnen Town Centre Master Plan credits the Belconnen Bikeway with delivering major improvements, including connections to the University of Canberra and CIT Bruce. The broader task of completing the town centre cycling network is still listed as underway.
“Some network gaps remain for future consideration,” the review states.
The original plan identified improvements along Benjamin Way, connections across Belconnen Way and a north–south route using the former Joynton Smith busway and Lathlain Street. These were intended to connect destinations including Florey shops, Westfield, the bus stations and Jamison.
The review also records unfinished work around Lake Ginninderra. Additional lighting and repairs to unstable paving are among the improvements to be delivered through the funded Emu Bank foreshore upgrade.
These projects matter to people already riding through Belconnen and those who would ride if the route felt safer. A missing connection can mean an awkward detour, an unexpected stretch in traffic or a crossing that someone riding with children would prefer to avoid.
The bikeway investment has given Belconnen a useful network to build on. Completing the remaining links would extend the value of that work.
Pedal Power wants the outstanding gaps clearly identified, prioritised and given delivery dates. After ten years, riders should be able to find out which connections are next and when work will begin.
