DEATH OF RIDER DEEPLY FELT BY CANBERRA CYCLING COMMUNITY
Pedal Power ACT is devastated by the death of a rider following a collision involving a car and three people riding bicycles on Gungahlin Drive in Franklin this morning.
Two other riders were taken to hospital, one in a critical condition.
“This is heartbreaking news. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the person who died,” Pedal Power ACT Executive Director Cecily Michaels said.
“Our thoughts are also with the two injured riders, the driver and everyone affected by this deeply distressing incident, including the emergency services personnel who responded.
“We are hoping for the best possible outcome for the injured riders and thinking of all those waiting for news.”
The circumstances surrounding the collision are still being investigated. Pedal Power ACT urges the community not to speculate or assign blame while that investigation continues.
“Gungahlin Drive and the surrounding area are commonly used by people riding across Canberra. This loss is deeply felt because we know it could have been any one of us, or someone we love, travelling on that road this morning,” Ms Michaels said.
“Everyone deserves to get home safely, regardless of whether they are travelling by bicycle, car, public transport or on foot. No family should have to receive news like this.
“While it is too early to comment on the circumstances of this collision, this tragedy reinforces the importance of continuing to improve road safety across the ACT.
“Pedal Power continues to advocate for safer cycling infrastructure and road conditions, including connected and separated cycling routes, appropriate road shoulders, clear signage and greater public awareness of minimum passing-distance laws.
“Creating safer roads is a shared community responsibility. It requires infrastructure, education and a transport system that places human life at its centre.
“Today, however, our immediate concern is for everyone involved. We stand with the family and friends grieving an unimaginable loss, and with a Canberra community deeply affected by this tragedy.”
Pedal Power ACT asks people to follow police directions and avoid the area while the road remains closed.
