Riding Through Time: National Ride2Work Day 🚲
Riding Through Time:
Since its humble beginnings in 1993 in Melbourne, National Ride2Work Day has grown from a small community initiative into Australia’s largest celebration of commuter cycling. Initiated by Senator Janet Rice, the first event drew just over 600 participants, all eager to swap their car keys for pedals and experience the joy and freedom of riding to work. That modest start sparked a movement that would spread across the country.
Over the next decade, the event gained momentum. By 2006, around 30,000 riders were participating across Victoria, including thousands of first-time cyclists who discovered a lasting love for commuting by bike. The event was more than just a one-day ride; it inspired people to rethink their daily commute, embrace healthier lifestyles, and experience firsthand the environmental benefits of choosing two wheels over four. Local businesses and governments joined in, hosting community breakfasts, bike check-ups, and cycling activities, fostering camaraderie among riders and helping to normalise cycling as a safe, fun, and practical mode of transport.
From its grassroots origins, Ride2Work Day evolved into a nationwide celebration. Cities across Australia now host welcoming events for riders of all abilities, from casual cyclists to seasoned commuters. The day is a platform to highlight cycling infrastructure, advocate for safer streets, and showcase the many benefits of active transport - health, environmental sustainability, and a stronger sense of community.
Today, Ride2Work Day is Australia’s biggest celebration of commuter riding, with tens of thousands of Australians participating each year. In 2025, we will be celebrating it on 15 October, inviting everyone to join in the fun, whether it’s riding solo, with colleagues, or as part of a larger community group.
