Share the joy of riding: Become a Big Skills assistant coach
For a child learning to ride, a little encouragement can make all the difference. We’re looking for friendly and enthusiastic volunteer assistant coaches to help young people progress from nervous beginners to proud, confident riders through our Big Skills for Small Bikes program.
Using volunteer leave offered by her ACT Public Service workplace, Lil Bryant-Johnson spent five mornings last week supporting children and their families and discovered just how rewarding the experience could be.
“If cycling brings you joy and you want to share that feeling with others, you will love being part of the team teaching Big Skills for Small Bikes.”
Assistant coaches help create a welcoming environment where children feel safe to try, wobble, fall and try again. You don’t need to be an expert coach. You just need to be patient, encouraging and keen to share the joy of cycling with the next generation.
“Assisting a diverse group of children to change from worried, underconfident wobblers to strong, capable riders is amazingly rewarding,” Lil said.
By volunteering, you’ll support local families, meet like-minded people and give children a skill that can bring them freedom, confidence and joy for years to come.
“If you have patience and enthusiasm and enjoy mentoring young people, I would commend volunteering on the Big Skills for Small Bikes course. It’s the easiest way to give a child a gift they can enjoy for life.”
If your workplace offers volunteer leave, this could be a wonderful way to use it. Whether you can join us for one day or support the entire course, your time will make a genuine difference.
