After years of planning and advocacy, construction of Stage 2A of the Kingston Cycleway, a key section of the C2 route connecting central Canberra with Queanbeyan, will begin in the week starting 3 August.
The new infrastructure will include a three-metre-wide shared path along the northern side of Bowen Drive, improved streetlighting, raised crossings and new kerb ramps.
Construction of Stage 2A is expected to take four months, with the new section scheduled to open by the end of 2026.
The Kingston Cycleway forms part of the ACT Government’s vision for a coordinated network of cycle routes across Canberra. Once completed, it will provide an important connection between Fyshwick, Kingston and central Canberra, improving access for commuters and recreational riders travelling from Queanbeyan and surrounding areas. More than 200 Pedal Power members live in these areas and stand to benefit from a safer and more direct cycling connection.
Pedal Power has worked closely with Transport Canberra and City Services to identify opportunities to improve the C2 route between Fyshwick and Commonwealth Avenue Bridge. On 30 July, Pedal Power representatives met with the project’s design consultants to provide further input into the design of Stage 2B.
We remain disappointed that the original route proposed years ago, which would have continued along Eastlake Parade, is no longer part of the project. That alignment would have served the dual purpose of connecting Fyshwick with central Canberra while also providing a direct link to the popular cycling path around Lake Burley Griffin.
Nevertheless, it is exciting to see this long-awaited project finally coming to fruition. Pedal Power welcomes the ACT Government’s commitment to delivering this valuable active travel infrastructure and looks forward to seeing people riding on the new section before the end of the year.
