Advocacy Update - Kurrajong

In this update, our advocates share what has been happening in Kurrajong and highlight the issues we’re working on to improve cycling infrastructure and promote safer active travel.

In this issue:

  • The Green at Dickson (DA 202544071): Submission on protecting and improving the C6 trunk cycle path.

  • Garden City Cycleway: Push for better light phasing at the new Limestone Avenue crossing.

  • Northbourne Avenue corridor: Early advocacy for dedicated cycle-only facilities and active travel streets.

The Green at Dickson – DA 202544071

The Tradies' proposed development in Dickson includes changes to the area behind the existing buildings and the creek between the Tradies and Daramalan College to create an open space with terraces, steps, common areas, and the like, and to re-wild the creek (currently in a concrete-lined drainage channel). See https://www.thegreenatdickson.com.au/

That area contains an existing heavily trafficked trunk cycle path (part of the Principle Cycle Route C6) parallel to the creek from Challis Street to to Cowper Street. That cycle path must be clearly delineated from the other areas so that people using that area recognise that it is used by people on bicycles and be maintained and improved (including widening to 5 m) by recognising it as a trunk cycle path used by riders travelling at speeds of 30+ km/h.
We have made a submission to the Development Application to that effect and are asking Roads ACT to support our submission.

Garden City Cycleway crossing of Limestone Avenue

We are attempting to get the Garden City Cycleway crossing of the on Limestone Avenue at the new traffic lights, that can only be ridden across in two phases/two greens, to have the light timing adjusted to allow people to ride across on green in one movement.

Northbourne Avenue corridor

We met with the NCA  and advised by the NCA chief that the ‘City and Gateway Design Framework’ (a joint NCA & ACT government document) was the NCA’s aspiration for that corridor. See https://www.nca.gov.au/planning/plans-policies-and-guidelines/city-and-gateway-urban-design-framework#. We put forward the argument that as the building construction along Northbourne Avenue was drawing to a close in a few years now was the time to start planning and designing for implementation of cycle-only facilities along the Avenue and active travel streets along the adjacent streets. At the Bicycle Advisory Group meeting that view was not rejected and Roads ACT who advised that we discuss things with the City Renewal Authority. We are yet to have such a discussion.

Pedal Power ACT

Pedal Power ACT is the largest cycling organisation in Australia’s Capital Territory.

We represent the interests of people who already ride bicycles and those who would like to.

Our organisation is social and also works consistently with local government on all bicycle riding related matters. Pedal Power ACT is all about supporting the community to be active and providing opportunities to do so.
