May the Fourth Family Bike Picnic: Fun, Games, and Galactic Vibes in Haig Park

On Saturday 4 May, Haig Park came alive with colour, costumes, and community spirit as families gathered for Pedal Power’s May the Fourth Be With You Family Bike Picnic. As part of our 50th Anniversary celebrations, and supported by the ACT Government’s City Renewal Authority Placemaking Grants program, the event offered a playful afternoon of bike games, dress-ups, and Star Wars-themed fun for riders big and small.

There was no street cycling required: all the action took place safely within the park, where young Jedi, tiny stormtroopers, and disco droids zoomed along grassy paths in a low-stress ride zone. A DIY bike decorating station let kids turn their bikes into X-wings and unicorn cruisers, while the ever-popular obstacle course kept riders laughing (and sometimes wobbling) as they tackled cones, avoiding trees, and tight turns.

A Ride with a Purpose

The event was more than just fun and games, it was about making cycling feel joyful, safe, and inclusive. With bike games, craft stations, picnic spots and plenty of space to ride freely, the day helped young riders build confidence while giving families a chance to enjoy Canberra’s green spaces together.

Adding to the excitement was the Best Dressed Awards, where costumed riders competed for glory. Judges awarded prizes for Most Creative Costume, Best Bike Bling, and even a special award for “Most Likely to Join the Rebel Alliance.”

A Huge Thank You

We’d like to extend our deepest thanks to all the incredible volunteers who helped make the day possible, from the game hosts and registration crew to the decorating station team and everyone who helped pack up with a smile. Your energy, enthusiasm, and time helped create a safe, welcoming, and joyful space for every family who joined us.

Looking Ahead

The May the Fourth picnic reminded us that cycling isn’t just about transport—it’s about joy, connection, and growing a community that rides together. Whether it’s a themed picnic or a Sunday family cruise, we’re building a culture where bikes are for everyone: all ages, all backgrounds, all abilities. With strong community spirit and a shared sense of fun, events like this are laying the groundwork for a more vibrant, bike-friendly Canberra.

Missed the ride? Don’t worry—Pedal Power hosts events all year round to keep you pedalling! From social rides to advocacy initiatives, we invite you to join us in making Canberra a safer, more accessible, and more vibrant cycling city.
