Active Travel Investment in Focus: Pedal Power Joins Pocock Press Conference

Pedal Power attended a press conference led by ACT Senator David Pocock on Wednesday, 24 March, where transport affordability, cost of living pressures, and the need for increased investment in active travel and integrated transport systems were placed firmly on the national agenda. Executive Director Cecily Michaels joined Greens leader Larissa Waters, ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury, independent MLA Fiona Carrick, and independent MLA Thomas Emerson, reflecting a growing crossbench focus on transport as a key economic issue.

Senator Pocock called for a coordinated national response to rising fuel prices, including more accessible, free or low-cost public transport. His proposal also emphasised the need for increased investment in integrated transport systems, with clear recognition that walking and cycling infrastructure must be part of the solution alongside public transport.

The discussion pointed to a broader shift in how transport affordability is being framed, not only as a question of fares, but of providing viable alternatives to driving. Contributions from Rattenbury, Waters and Emerson reinforced the need for long-term investment in public transport, as well as cycling and walking infrastructure that supports everyday travel.

The press conference also comes amid ongoing debate within the ACT about how the system would respond to increased demand. ACT Transport Minister Chris Steel has cautioned that reducing fares could lead to a surge in usage, warning that "buses might get too full if demand rises too quickly."

Pedal Power, however, views increased public transport use as a positive outcome. Higher patronage reflects both demand for affordable travel and a willingness among Canberrans to shift away from private vehicles. It also highlights the need for continued investment to expand capacity and improve service frequency.

From an active transport perspective, this moment presents an opportunity. Strengthening cycling and walking connections can help relieve pressure on public transport, support first and last mile journeys, and provide additional low-cost options for the community.

Pedal Power maintains that an integrated transport system will be key to addressing both affordability and sustainability, ensuring more Canberrans have practical and accessible choices in how they travel.
