Celebrating Our Volunteers This National Volunteer Week

Ella Piestrzynski | Community Engagement Officer

Happy National Volunteer Week! Pedal Power would like to extend a huge thank you to our volunteers. As a volunteer-run organisation, we simply could not operate without you. Across 2025 and 2026, more than 300 volunteers have been involved in our programs, with many participating in multiple. In 2025 alone, volunteers contributed more than 8,232 hours. Hear what our volunteers have to say about their experiences volunteering with us:

"[The event] seemed to go very well, and I appreciated the chance to connect with staff, members, and local politicians on the day."

"I really enjoyed the experience and would be happy to do it again."

"I had a great time helping out and would be very happy to volunteer again at future events."

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme is Your Year to Volunteer, celebrating the incredible contribution of volunteers and encouraging more people to get involved. We encourage our members to consider volunteering with Pedal Power; there is always room for more volunteers! Volunteering is a rewarding way to join a new community, give back, and share your love of cycling with fellow Canberrans.

If you think volunteering with Pedal Power might be for you, we are always welcoming new volunteers to our programs. We are also currently recruiting for some new volunteer roles:

Bike Rack Delivery

Pedal Power rents bike racks to external organisations for events such as Enlighten and Floriade. As part of this service, we deliver the racks to and from event sites. We are currently seeking a second Bike Rack Delivery volunteer to collect the racks from our storage containers at Mount Stromlo, deliver them to events, and return them afterward. In particular, we need someone available to deliver the racks to Floriade on or around Monday, 7 September (exact date TBC).

This role involves using the trailer to load the racks at Stromlo Forest Park and deliver them to the Events ACT compound at Floriade in Commonwealth Park. Training will be provided. Volunteers receive $50 per delivery to help cover petrol costs, so completing both setup and pack-up would total $100. You must be comfortable driving with a trailer.

Because we already have one volunteer in this role, delivery dates may be shared when suitable. However, our current volunteer is unavailable for Floriade, so availability for that event is essential.

Office Volunteer

We are seeking one or two additional volunteers to come into the office weekly or fortnightly to make membership calls. This includes calling expired members to ask whether they would like to rejoin Pedal Power and helping them renew if they do. Volunteers will also call new members to welcome them to Pedal Power and answer any questions they may have about the organisation.

Training and equipment will be provided. Volunteers can come into the office from Monday to Wednesday by prior arrangement. A script will also be provided, and staff will be available to answer questions. There is no minimum hour requirement, and you are welcome to contribute as much time as you can. However, we are looking for volunteers who can commit to coming in once a week or once a fortnight.

Bike Library Administrator

The Bike Library is seeking an administrator to work from home and help manage loans and analyse data. Loan details are currently recorded through an electronic form that includes borrowers’ contact information. The administrator will email borrowers after their visit to provide a copy of the waiver and remind them of their loan expiry date. They will also follow up by email on loans nearing expiry and track returned bikes using the electronic form. An email address will be provided for this role.

The form also captures attendance information, and the administrator will be responsible for analysing data such as:

  • Number of people who visited the library

  • Number of volunteer hours contributed by you and other Bike Library volunteers

  • Number of donated bikes

  • Number of bikes loaned

  • Number of bikes repaired

This role has no set hours, but it would likely require 1 to 3 hours per week, with more time needed initially. We are also happy to share the role between multiple volunteers, so if you would like to volunteer with a friend or partner, please let us know.

To express interest in any of the roles above, or in another Pedal Power volunteer role, please email membership@pedalpower.org.au and include:

  1. Your name

  2. The role/s you are applying for

  3. Your availability

  4. And any relevant experience

All interested volunteers will be invited to the office for an induction meeting to learn more about the role and meet our staff.
