When the Unexpected Happens: David’s Story

When Pedal Power member David had a crash while riding on Bruce Ridge, he was reminded just how quickly things can go wrong on even a familiar ride.

David’s front wheel dropped unexpectedly into a deep, water-filled depression on a fire trail, sending him over the handlebars. Thankfully, he avoided any broken bones and was eventually able to get himself to the hospital. However, the incident still resulted in scans, treatment, physio, time off work, and a long recovery for neck ligament injuries.

The experience reinforced for David the importance of having the right cover in place. While he had previously let his rider insurance lapse, he now makes sure his whole family is covered through automatic payments so their insurance never unintentionally expires. He also highlighted the value of ambulance cover, noting that transport costs alone can quickly become significant after an accident.

For David, the value of rider insurance isn’t just about major crashes. It’s the reassurance that if something unexpected does happen, whether on the road, a trail, or during an everyday ride, you have support behind you when you need it most.

Just as importantly, David took the time to report the hazard to Parks and Wildlife ACT, and was pleased to see later improvements made to the trail to help prevent similar crashes for other riders.

“Thankfully, the injuries weren’t worse,” David says. “It was a good reminder that accidents can happen when you least expect them, in seemingly innocuous circumstances. Having bike riding insurance and ambulance cover makes a real difference.”
