World Bicycle Day 2026
In 2018, the United Nations declared 3 June as World Bicycle Day, recognising the bicycle as one of the simplest, most sustainable and most effective forms of transport ever created.
For more than 200 years, bikes have helped people move freely, connect with their communities and experience their cities in a different way. Today, bicycles remain just as important, offering a low-cost, healthy and environmentally friendly way to travel while helping reduce congestion and improve the liveability of our communities.
At Pedal Power, we see the impact of cycling every day across Canberra. We see commuters choosing to ride instead of sitting in traffic, families riding together to school and local shops, children building confidence on bikes, and more people discovering the freedom and accessibility that e-bikes provide.
But World Bicycle Day is about more than just celebrating bikes. It is also a reminder of why safe and connected cycling infrastructure matters. When people feel safe riding, more people ride and that benefits everyone, whether they cycle or not.
Cycling creates healthier communities, supports local businesses, reduces pressure on our roads and public transport networks, and helps make Canberra a more connected and enjoyable place to live.
Whether you ride every day, occasionally on weekends, or are thinking about getting back on a bike, today is the perfect excuse to get out for a ride and celebrate the humble bicycle.
Happy World Bicycle Day from all of us at Pedal Power.
