Advocacy Wins: Road Obstruction Resolved

Two weeks ago, the Pedal Power office received a call for help from one of our concerned members.
A large building project underway along Anthony Rolfe Avenue in Gungahlin had caused a significant safety concern. The construction team had blocked off the left lane of the road, including the cycle lane, forcing bike riders into the single remaining (and fast-moving) lane heading towards Gungahlin. For vulnerable road users, who are equally entitled to use that road, this was not only intimidating but downright dangerous.
Thankfully, one of our dedicated Pedal Power advocates was quick to act. They inspected the site, took photos (seen above), and submitted a detailed report to Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS). After a swift conversation with the builder, the issue was resolved in no time.
This outcome shows how far Canberra has come in recognising that everyone deserves to feel safe on our roads, no matter how they travel. When lanes are closed for construction or maintenance, planners must ensure there’s equal consideration for all users, with safe detours and clear guidance provided. Vulnerable users should never find their routes disrupted without a viable, safe alternative.
In this case, both TCCS and the contractor responded quickly and effectively. Their actions restored a safer environment for all road users, and we’re pleased to say it was an excellent result!
Can you help? Road and route closures and traffic congestion will change often. If you see anything that you think should be mentioned here, please call or email Pedal Power (communications@pedalpower.org.au) and help us to keep this regular bulletin up to date. Thank you!
