Advocacy Wins: Coombs Link Closer After Years of Advocacy

After five years of persistent advocacy, the long-awaited cycling and pedestrian bridge over Weston Creek at Coombs is finally gaining momentum — and we're cautiously optimistic!
This project will close a crucial gap in the commuter route from Molonglo to Civic via Scrivener Dam, eliminating around 1.5 km of detours.

What’s the latest?
- A 50 m-long light steel bridge is now in the design phase
- It will feature a non-slip deck and 4 m clearance between handrails
- A new path will link the bridge to Streeton Dr/Cotter Rd, bypassing the awkward hill near the RSPCA
However, there's still critical work to be done.

Design concern: The proposed 9% gradient on the eastern approach is a major concern — steeper than recommended for shared paths and not safe in a situation where a bridge crossing is at the bottom of the slope. As one of our advocates noted, anything over 7% can exclude mobility scooter users and discourage less confident riders.
We’re continuing to push for a more inclusive and accessible design that serves all members of the community— not just the confident and able-bodied.

Next milestones:
Approvals are hoped for by the end of 2025, with construction in 2026.

Let’s keep the momentum going to ensure this vital link is built right. Thanks to everyone who has helped drive this forward!

Can you help? Road and route closures and traffic congestion will change often. If you see anything that you think should be mentioned here, please call or email Pedal Power (communications@pedalpower.org.au) and help us to keep this regular bulletin up to date. Thank you!
