City in Motion: Construction Updates for Cyclists

6 June 2025

Hello there, there’s nothing big happening until toward the end of June, so far as bike access and safety is concerned. The southbound route just past Vernon Circle still has its left lane blocked off for bikes, and left left turn is still a bit squeezy. Once the road straightens out, London Circuit appears from the left (East) side as a T-junction with traffic lights. The amazing bit at the moment is that bikes and vehicles can turn left and right into and out of London Circuit here: I had a go turning right from Commonwealth Ave Northbound into London Circuit, on a bike, with light traffic. Don’t try it during peak hours! This is also the corner where the rail line will turn 90 degrees from London Circuit (West) into Commonwealth Avenue when the rail line is built in a couple of years, so I expect further road traffic changes around then.

A cycle path starts to appear as you ride past London Circuit on Commonwealth Avenue southbound. Take this new lane which becomes a freshly finished, beautiful new path to cross the slip lane coming in from the left.

This is the crossing that I have been talking about during construction for a few months now, however the completed job really is a work of art!

There appears to be a drilling rig in the middle of the bridge: that is a very odd place for a drilling rig. However, a look underneath the bridge shows that it’s actually a suspended gantry to allow inspectors or workmen access under the bridge.

If you choose to avoid the city centre non the main roads and instead bear left toward the lush, green, beautiful new park on the Acton foreshore, you will see there is an equally beautiful tarmac bike path that takes you directly, at speed, to the base of the footbridge over Parkes Way towards Marcus Clarke St. Now this path gives you the opportunity to enter or leave the bridge at over 30 Km/h by bike, but please ride slower here because there will also be pedestrians on the bridge and on the paths that go across the mouth of the bridge. This is a significant risk of serious injury here and I anticipate there will be some traffic calming infrastructure installed soon.

The west side of London Circuit has more blocked-off work areas now and the public passing spaces around the outside are a bit narrower and more convoluted. However, these routes are still accessible and there are plenty of traffic controllers to point you in the right direction.

Can you help? Road and route closures and traffic congestion will change often. If you see anything that you think should be mentioned here, please call or email Pedal Power (communications@pedalpower.org.au) and help us to keep this regular bulletin up to date. Thank you!
