Advocating for Better Bus and Bike Integration

Pedal Power recently met with Transport Canberra to discuss opportunities to improve the integration of cycling and public transport across the ACT.

Many of our members combine riding and public transport for commuting, recreation and everyday travel, and we know that making these journeys easier can encourage more people to choose active and sustainable transport options.

The discussion covered a range of issues raised by members, including improving access for children's bicycles, ensuring bus-mounted bicycle racks remain fit for purpose as bicycle designs evolve, providing better information through MyWay+ about which buses are equipped with bicycle racks, and improving access to bicycle storage facilities at interchanges.

We also discussed the new bicycle cage at Woden Interchange and some of the practical challenges users have experienced with accessing the cage and the wall-mounted bicycle racks, particularly riders of heavier bicycles such as e-bikes.

Whilst Pedal Power would like to see improvements in these areas sooner rather than later, we recognise that Transport Canberra must balance a range of operational, safety, customer and budget considerations. We appreciate Transport Canberra's willingness to listen to the concerns and suggestions raised by our members, to consider opportunities for improvement, and to continue the conversation.

Pedal Power will continue to advocate for practical measures that make it easier for people to combine cycling and public transport and looks forward to ongoing discussions with Transport Canberra.
