E-Bikes are helping more Canberrans ride more often
Recent debate surrounding e-mobility legislation in Queensland has led to increasingly negative public discussion around e-bikes. But when Pedal Power asked the Canberra cycling community to share their experiences, a very different picture emerged.
For many riders, e-bikes are not about speed or novelty. They are helping people replace car trips, stay active, carry children and groceries, return to cycling, and make everyday transport more accessible.
Simon shared that his family originally bought an e-bike to replace a second car, but now finds themselves using the bikes for many of their everyday trips instead.
“School runs, trips to the shops and farmers market, visiting friends, going out for coffee or dinner — we use the bikes for almost everything,” he said.
Alex explained that adding electric assistance to the family cargo bike made transport significantly easier.
“It’s made long distances with kids and gear much more manageable, especially on Canberra’s hills,” he said.
Others highlighted the role e-bikes play in supporting health and independence.
Thea, who lives with chronic lung disease, said her e-bike allows her to continue enjoying Canberra’s cycling network and outdoor spaces.
“Without my e-bike, I’d probably be another car on the road,” she said.
She also praised Canberra’s separated cycling infrastructure, saying well-designed paths make it easier for people of different ages and abilities to comfortably share public space.
The stories reflect a broader reality often missing from public debate: e-bikes are helping more people ride more often. For some, they provide a practical alternative to driving. For others, they make cycling physically accessible again.
As Canberra continues investing in active travel infrastructure, many riders see e-bikes as part of a healthier, more sustainable and more connected transport future.
Pedal Power continues to collect positive e-bike stories from the community to highlight the benefits e-bikes bring to everyday life across Canberra. If you have a story of your own, email us: communications@pedalpower.org.au
