Advocacy update: clearer cycling access secured at Commonwealth Avenue Bridge

Update Thursday, 9 April 2026

Pedal Power has received reports that riders are being directed into the slip lane and onto the westbound Parkes Way. We consider this arrangement unacceptable and unsafe.

If you encounter this situation, we recommend using the footpath to the left, which leads through the car park and connects to the footbridge that exits onto Clunies Ross Street as a safer alternative.

Pedal Power is actively engaging with the relevant authorities to urgently rectify the situation and ensure safe, clear access for people riding through the area.

Update from Thursday, 2 April

Following concerns raised by members about changing access and unclear detours around the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge works, Pedal Power has been in direct contact with both the Light Rail Stage 2A construction team and ACT Government project teams to push for safer, clearer access for people riding through the city.

This issue was raised directly by a member at our recent Annual General Meeting, with particular concern about the northbound route into the city after crossing the bridge. The member highlighted the confusion caused by frequently changing access arrangements, limited advance notice, and unclear wayfinding at key decision points, especially during weekend shutdowns and lane closures. This feedback reinforced what we had already been hearing from riders using this corridor and enabled us to elevate the matter as an urgent advocacy priority.

We are pleased to share that this advocacy has already led to practical improvements.

Canberra Metro has committed to providing Pedal Power with updates in the week prior to each weekend of works, including any traffic and access changes affecting riders and pedestrians. Additional signage is also being installed at the northern end of the bridge to clearly guide riders into the city, alongside the prominent yellow detour signs already used during weekend shutdowns.

Importantly, Infrastructure Canberra has now finalised an updated cyclist wayfinding map showing the recommended routes during both the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge works and Light Rail Stage 2A construction.

The updated map confirms that the eastern span of the bridge remains open for riders, with signed access routes into the city via the C8 City Loop, Albert Street, and the Northbourne Avenue dedicated bike lanes. Riders should still expect some detours and short delays, particularly during weekend shutdown periods, and continue to follow on-site signage and traffic controllers.

This is a strong example of member feedback translating directly into advocacy outcomes. Thank you to everyone who reached out, shared photos, and reported issues on the route. Your on-the-ground experiences, including those raised at the AGM, have helped strengthen our case for clearer signage, better coordination between agencies, and safer active travel access through this complex work zone.

We will continue to monitor the situation and keep members updated as works progress.
