Finding Freedom on Two Wheels: Fatemeh’s Story
When Fatemeh joined Pedal Power’s Cycle Well program, she wasn’t just learning to ride - she was realising a lifelong dream.
“I grew up in a culture where women weren’t allowed to cycle,” she said. “Learning to ride at 43 has been life-changing. I’ll never forget that moment I finally took off and shouted, ‘I’m doing it!’”
Born a Hazara refugee from Afghanistan and raised in Iran, Fatemeh’s story is one of quiet courage and determination. Before joining Cycle Well, she’d already bought a second-hand bike - but it wasn’t until the course that she gained the skills and confidence to truly ride.
Now a proud Pedal Power member, Fatemeh joined hundreds of other Canberrans for National Ride2Work Day, cycling to work for the very first time - and to her delight, winning the $500 voucher from The Ride Shop.
“This program doesn’t just teach cycling,” she said. “It gives people freedom, confidence, and joy.”
Fatemeh’s journey captures what Pedal Power is all about - helping people discover independence, connection, and the simple happiness of life on two wheels.
