Kurrajong Advocacy Digest
July 2024
Kurrajong continues to be one of Canberra's busiest electorates for cycling and current active travel projects, with major infrastructure works, planning proposals and development applications all underway. Pedal Power's advocacy team continues to work closely with the cycling community, Government agencies, developers and decision-makers to ensure people riding bikes and walking are considered at every stage.
Garden City Cycleway
The Garden City Cycleway is an important project that Pedal Power has consistently advocated for. Construction of the connection between Majura Avenue and Cooyong Street is completed. The crossing or Cooyong Street to Gebnge Street is underway and should be completed in 2026. The next stage between Majura Avenue and the Federal Highway continues through detailed design with funding for part of the construction secured in the 2026-27 ACT Budget with Commonwealth contribution. Pedal Power continues to advocate for funding to complete the remainder of this important principal cycle route and ensure it delivers a continuous, safe north–south connection along the eastern side of Canberra’s inner north.
Woden to Civic Bikeway (Northern section)
Pedal Power continues to advocate strongly for the delivery of the Woden to Civic Bikeway independent of Light Rail Stage 2B. The first stage between Kent Street and Commonwealth Avenue Bridge has progressed through further discussions with ACT Government officers, with work continuing on the business case and detailed design. We continue to press for construction to begin as soon as possible.
Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Renewal
The Commonwealth Avenue Bridge renewal project continues to progress following extensive consultation. Pedal Power successfully advocated for wide, five-metre shared paths on both sides, improved bridge approaches and better path connections at both ends. With the design now agreed, we are monitoring construction to help ensure safe and accessible conditions are maintained for people riding throughout the works.
Kingston Cycleway (C2)
Construction continues on Canberra's improving the principal cycle route C2 corridor linking the city, from Kings Avenue Bridge to Fyshwick (and thence to Queanbeyan). The section between Kings Avenue Bridge and Bowen Park has been confirmed as permanent infrastructure. The remainder will go along Wentworth Avenue with the section past Bowen Park to the EastLake Parade junction currently under construction.
Pedal Power has made submissions throughout both planning stages of the Kingston Arts Precinct project, advocating for stronger walking and cycling connections between Kingston Foreshore, the Arts Precinct and surrounding neighbourhoods. As adjacent developments progress, we continue encouraging a coordinated approach to active travel across the entire precinct.
Lake Burley Griffin Circuit principal cycle route (LBG)
The Lake Burley Griffin circuit is a vital part of Canberra’s cycling network, offering one of Australia’s best half-day rides and connecting principal cycle routes radiating from the city in several directions.
The circuit is now separate from the C2 route through Kingston Foreshore. However, the provision of adequate cycling infrastructure through Kingston Foreshore and along Eastlake Parade, originally agreed as part of C2, remains unresolved. Pedal Power continues to advocate for safe, high-quality cycling facilities in this area to improve access to Kingston Foreshore and complete this important missing link around Lake Burley Griffin.
Acton Waterfront & Ngamawari
Pedal Power remains represented on the Acton Waterfront working group and continues advocating for high-quality cycling facilities throughout the redevelopment. Recent advocacy has also resulted in improved detour signage through the construction area, helping riders safely navigate one of Canberra's busiest shared path corridors.
City Hill
Consultation continues on the future of City Hill and the surrounding Vernon Circle and London Circuit precinct. Pedal Power is involved in the City Hill master plan process. It advocates for cycling facilities around and through the Park, around Vernon Circle and on the roads giving access to the park and Vernon Circle. Pedal Power is monitoring the project closely to ensure cycling remains central to future plans for Canberra's civic heart, including direct connections through the precinct and integration with surrounding cycling routes.
Protected Path Crossings
Pedal Power is advocating for protected crossings (traffic light controlled, raised wombat crossing, etc) on all road crossings on the principal and main cycle routes.
The ACT Government continues rolling out raised priority crossings across Kurrajong, with two of four crossings around Lake Burley Griffin already completed and additional locations progressing through design.. The priority crossing on route C3 at Bauhinia Street is nearly completed. The unusual road geometry means the speed hump has been placed on the adjacent corner, and the white lines will be installed once the zebra has been delivered from the National Zoo.
Canberra Railway Station Accessibility Project
Pedal Power has made detailed submissions supporting better active travel access to Canberra Railway Station, including direct connections from the Kingston Cycleway and secure bicycle parking suitable for day trips and longer-distance rail travel.
Northbourne Avenue corridor
Pedal Power was involved in the development of the cycling aspects in the joint National Capital Authority (NCA)–ACT Government “City and Gateway Design Framework” that has recently been confirmed as the plan for that area by the NCA and the ACT City Renewal Authority. Pedal Power is currently pushing for the cycling aspects of that Framework to be addressed in planning, design and construction.
