Good People, Good Views, Good Ride

After a packed session at the National Library exploring why bicycles continue to capture our imaginations, about twenty riders joined Pedal Power Board member and long-time ride leader John Widdup for a gentle loop around the wetlands of Lake Burley Griffin on Saturday 15 November.

The talk beforehand, Two Wheels to Adventure: Bikes and why we love them, drew a crowd of well over a hundred people. Facilitator Dr Rebecca Fleming guided a lively conversation with the panel: Tony Wheeler AO, co-founder of Lonely Planet, and historian Dr Daniel Oakman, well known for works such as Wild Ride and his biography of Sir Hubert Opperman.

While the discussion ranged widely across the joy and culture of cycling, one of the most memorable parts of the event was the display of historic cycling journals that Tony Wheeler helped bring to life through his generous donation. The digitised collection includes striking photographs showing just how versatile bicycles have been across generations. Among them are images of shearers travelling between stations with their bikes, and riders adapting their machines for work, exploration, and everyday travel. It’s a vivid reminder that bicycles have long been tools for creativity, independence, and opportunity.

The Pedal Power ride that followed brought together younger riders, seasoned regulars and curious newcomers who rolled out behind John at a relaxed pace. The group chatted easily as they crossed bridges and cruised along the wetlands, enjoying quieter views of the lake. John kept the ride steady, making sure everyone could stay together and take in the scenery.

It was one of those afternoons that captures what makes cycling in Canberra special: good conversation, a beautiful setting and a gentle spin along familiar paths shared with people who simply enjoy being out on their bikes.
