City in Motion: Construction Updates for Cyclists

14 Aug 2025

Light rail

Building the light rail won’t start in earnest until all the preparation is complete. So far, we have seen an astounding amount of preparations, checking and modernising all the underground structures, effectively building a small hill strong enough to support a city, and rebuilding the roads on top of the hill that will surround the rail once it has been built.

This work is now close to completion, and during the work, helped by persistent gentle reminders, the maintenance of access for pedestrians and bikes has improved from patchy at times to a consistent network of safe, well-signed access with ramps on every kerb suitable for bikes and wheelchairs. We are now at a state where we rarely find anything to point out for remediation, while realising that this still a big construction site that needs access for large supplies and powerful equipment.

Most of the deep trenches around  west and north London Circuit have been refilled and concreted again with large service access points.

The south west corner of the site and London Circuit now have separated bike and footpaths.

As well as traffic lights, road markings and all the underground access covers look complete.

Today, there is still some disruption for bike riders. However it is predictable and well managed with good signage, especially when bike routes have been changed to allow for construction. Importantly, riding a bike is the easiest and most convenient way to get around the city with minimal delay and bike riders are grateful that bike-suitable routes are being maintained.

Garema Place

The big hole in the middle of Garema Place is getting deeper, the trench heading out from Garema plce towards Scott’s Crossing I being filled in again in places, yet both bikes and pedestrians have reasonable access in every direction and to every retail outlet, and some new surface tiles have been relaid on the north side too.

Garden City Cycleway

The more I use the Garden City cyleway, the more I like it! It’s been well designed, and I can happily ride at 20 Km/h plus on it, with enough width, decent sightlines, and no car traffic, it is pleasant and relaxing, as well as being very useful. There are even mirrors on limited vision car exits that cross the paths to make life easier for car to avoid bikes. How good is that?! (to quote an ex-prime minister…)

Can you help? Road and route closures and traffic congestion will change often. If you see anything that you think should be mentioned here, please call or email Pedal Power (communications@pedalpower.org.au) and help us to keep this regular bulletin up to date. Thank you!
