Advocacy: Active Travel Progress in Belconnen

Mirek Ciolek & Rob Dalitz | Pedal Power Advocacy - Ginnindera

Over the past few years, the Pedal Power Ginninderra Advocacy team has stepped up efforts to enhance active travel infrastructure across greater Belconnen. Our ongoing conversations with the ACT Government are delivering results, while several major wins have already been achieved, more work lies ahead.

Major Wins

Gundaroo Drive Duplication — Canberra, ACT

  • Gundaroo Drive duplication — Now complete, this project includes high-quality cycle paths on both sides and a new bridge over Ginninderra Creek. A signalised crossing links the path to Lake Ginninderra’s foreshore, creating seamless bike access from Gungahlin to Belconnen with east–west connections at Gundaroo Drive.

  • Belconnen Bikeway & Battye Street link — The Belconnen Bikeway is a project that the Ginninderra Advocacy team provided a lot of input into. We successfully advocated for a Battye Street connection that ties the Bikeway to the AIS and continues to Civic via North Canberra, resulting in one continuous, separated cycle route.

  • Lake Ginninderra shared path — The eastern side, stretching from John Knight Park to Ginninderra Drive East, is now complete, including a ramp connection. Construction around the rest of the lake is planned in the coming years.

  • Lathlain Street precinct — Cycle paths are included in the proposed Lathlain Street redevelopment. This project is expected to proceed alongside precinct development, and we are working to ensure the new infrastructure links effectively with the surrounding main path network.

  • Suburban upgrades — New paths in Lawson and the installation of lights through Kaleen's main path are examples of local improvements we’ve championed.

  • William Hovell Drive main path — With forward funding now secured, construction is restarting on a key route from Drake Brockman Drive to Bindubi Street via Coppins Crossing Road. This will connect south-west Belconnen directly to central Canberra and Molonglo. Safe feeder paths from West Belconnen suburbs remain critical to ensure accessibility and usage.

Projects Still Awaiting Funding

Despite their acknowledged value, several key routes remain unplanned and unfunded, and our campaign continues:

Lake Ginninderra shared path — Canberra, ACT

  • Southern Cross Drive main path to Ginninderry & Kippax — A high-priority corridor through generous roadside reserves, with minimal driveway conflict. We’ve provided detailed plans to the Government and will promote them further with the ACT Greens.

  • Belconnen Way west to the City — A direct connection with challenges around east-west driveway access. We believe Southern Cross Drive offers a safer, more efficient alternative.

  • Drake Brockman Drive trunk path (private, staged delivery) — Stage 2 is approved and in final design. On completion, this will create a 2.5 m-wide “off-road” trunk path from William Hovell Drive to Pro Hart Avenue, with side paths on both the north and south.

  • Benjamin Way main path — Proposed to include a shared zone at Westfield. Funding has been redirected to the Belconnen Bikeway, leaving this still awaiting delivery.

  • Eastern Valley Way link — A missing connection between the Lake Ginninderra main path (via Bindubi Street) and Emu Bank.

  • Coulter Drive corridor path — Spanning William Hovell to Ginninderra Drive; minor upgrades have been completed, with full delivery pending.

  • Florey green corridor extension — Extends the Belconnen Bikeway to the northwest via John Cleland Crescent. A safe crossing of Coulter Drive remains the main hurdle.
